  President's Desk

At the outset, my warm regards and greetings to the esteemed members of the Society for Advancement of Electrochemical Science & Technology (SAEST). It is a great privilege and honor for me to take over as President of this esteemed society. SAEST is a registered professional society with a proud past and an exciting future. It is one of the largest and most prestigious societies of scientists, engineers, technologists, academicians and industrialists in the field of electrochemical science and technology in India.

SAEST strives to disseminate knowledge in the field of electrochemical science and technology as its chartered goal. Together with CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, Tamilnadu, India, a premier electrochemical laboratory, and other academic institutions & industrial partners, the society organizes many national and international conferences/symposiums. SAEST has become one of the most vibrant societies in the country with more than 2000 active members from various scientific & engineering disciplines. It serves the interests of all of them by conducting National Convention of Electrochemists, International Symposium on Advances in Electrochemical Science & Technology apart from need based training programs, one day workshops, hands on training programs for the aspiring electrochemists etc.. All these events provide an excellent opportunity for interaction between the young & budding scientists with leading experts.

While the society has been fulfilling its objectives over the period of its existence and has been gaining strength with each passing year, it is also pertinent to give a renewed thrust and vigor in some of the futuristic electrochemistry based technologies in the areas of Alternative energy & Carbon capture and utilization technologies which have become a reality in the recent times. The new generation battery technologies, Electro and Bio-electrochemical reduction of CO2 for the generation of liquid fuels, photo electrochemical water splitting for H2 production, solar to liquid fuels are some such frontier areas which are to be promoted and encouraged so as to have indigenous, cost effective and sustainable technologies that can address India's growing energy needs. I see a great role for electrochemical and bio-electrochemical processes and pathways in addressing this need. Therefore it is incumbent upon SAEST to play a very active role in the promotion of these areas.

And as I refer to the proud past of SAEST, I wish to acknowledge the endeavors and achievements of the past Presidents and other office bearers. Their persistent, passionate and pragmatic leadership of the society combined with a clear vision has brought the SAEST to its current position of eminence amongst global electrochemical societies. On behalf of the new governing council, I also take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation to the contributions made by Prof. Sampath and his team for leading the society ably during their tenure and also setting a new bench mark of wide scale international participation in the SAEST events.

In the coming years, the flag-ship events of SAEST are the Twenty first National Convention of Electrochemists (NCE-21) and the Thirteenth International Symposium on Advances in Electrochemical Science and Technology (iSAEST-13). I am sure; you will lend your support to the incumbent team in the successful conduct of the various programs of the society and also actively contribute to SAEST in scaling newer heights.
